Cheltenham Science Festival - Engineering Apollo

Yesterday, an early start (for a Sunday morning), to see Chris Riley's talk - Engineering Apollo.

This was an excellent talk about the engineering behind the Apollo missions, and struck a real chord with me - remembering the events of nearly 40 years ago. I may have to dig out my copy of "The Dish" again...

A very bright sky after sunset last night too - but no NLC's apparently visible.

  1. I had the wonderful opportunity to see the Apollo 16 blastoff as a young teenage astro geek. The size and scale of the rocket and support structures can not be really be appreciated on film. Even from a distance of several miles they where gigantic! The view of that wonderful feat of engineering leaving the pad was unforgettable - and the sound!

  2. A truely awesome machine. In Cheltenham we have only one small tower block - maybe 15 stories high, but it is still only about a third the height of a Saturn V...
